Program Description:
“Liberal Studies is an interdisciplinary major primarily for students in elementary-level education, including early childhood education and special education. It is intended as a "super" general education by requiring competencies across a broad spectrum of knowledge rather than in-depth study of a single discipline, which will be just the sort of preparation most suitable for teaching at the lower grades. Individuals who intend to earn majors in both Education and Liberal Studies will work with advisors in both fields.
Students who desire a broad general education in the best tradition of the liberal arts and who wish to avoid the specialization of a major field may also elect the Liberal Studies major.
They have students choose from a small variety of concentration areas. Each one is described on the data above under the advanced studies area.
They do not have their own faculty. The current faculty are from other departments. For example, the director of Liberal Studies is an Assistant Professor and Chair of English in the English department.
Each student has advance studies areas. These are two sets of concentration areas of the students choice. Along with that the general electives are also what the student wants. The advance study areas are 21 credits total and they all have to be 300 level courses. You can receive your BA and MA
There are many different areas within the program. Four in particular which have their own separate degree check sheet. They include:
Liberal Studies -- Early (only) Education
Liberal Studies -- Elementary (only) Education
Liberal Studies -- Middle (only) Education
Liberal Studies -- Special (only) Education
The program does not highlight any specific accomplishments from faculty or staff. The school currently has 1,450 full time students and approximately 500 grad and part time students. The student/ faculty ratio for the undergrad is 14 to 1, whereas it is 8 to 1 for graduate students. This shows that there is more one on one between instructor and student. However, the specific Liberal Studies program does not have academic advisors specifically for that type of major. Each advisor braches out from a different department.
The school also offers internship opportunities.
It does not specify that the program offers any abroad programs but the program does grant two different majors and assist in working with advisors in those particular fields.
